Project Purity:

You’re Not Alone

Purity culture did a number on me growing up. It still affects my life today, even though I no longer attend a church. It makes an ugly appearance when I least expect it. It shows up in my confidence. It shows up in the way I see my own body. It shows up in my sex life.

I am on a journey to pluck purity culture from my soul and replace it with something healthier. This is what has inspired the book I am currently writing.

If purity culture has ever impacted you, I would love to hear from you. Fill out the form below (it is and forever will be completely anonymous) and let me know what Bible verses or phrases you remember being hurled at you and what those verses mean (or meant) to you. Once there is ample participation, I will go through the responses to see which responses seem to be the most common. Then, I will house those responses (anonymously) on this page, and some responses might end up in my book.

The purpose of this experiment is one, research for my book, and two, so that people who are affected by purity culture have a place to share their experience and read the experiences of others, so that we may know we are not alone.

With this webpage and with my book, I hope to instill in others a knowing that there is nothing wrong with you. Your body, your sexuality, your soul (if you believe in souls) are deserving of love right now - not later, once you’ve prayed enough or cried enough or suffered enough or asked for forgiveness enough or exercised enough. If purity culture has affected you, I want you to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You can heal from the harmful things purity culture teaches.

You are loved, and you are enough - just the way you are.
